Crystal Students Help Host Fentanyl Awareness Event
The Hillsborough Youth Commission (HYC), including Crystal students Rohan D ‘25, Griffin J ‘24, Chase H ‘26, Erica L ‘26, and Chiara L ‘26, as well as Hillsborough City Council member Leslie Ragsdale, P '17, P '21, P '21, hosted its first-ever Fentanyl Awareness Day to coincide with National Fentanyl Awareness Day on May 7.
It was a well-received community educational event. A slate of prominent community leaders spoke about fentanyl awareness, how to use Narcan, and most importantly, how to create a community of caring.
The most powerful speaker was Ms. Liz Walker, the mother of Colin Walker, a local 17-year-old student who passed away from inadvertent fentanyl poisoning in 2021.
Rohan D ‘25 said after the event, “Many of us students, and our parents, do not think this could ever happen to us. But it can. We want to spread the word to save lives.”
Crystal now has Narcan, the only antidote for fentanyl poisoning, on both campuses through our partnership with the San Mateo County Coalition for Safe Schools and Communities and their Naloxone Toolkit.
